The Hornbeam bonsai with carving completed for the day. Given the size of the job we had taken on in just one session, re-arrangement of the branches was left for the future. Our next task was to stain the wood.
Mike applying a coat of lime-sulphur to the deadwood. Water-based black paint was applied to the hollows to darken them, ash was applied directly onto the wood before being painted with a coat of lime-sulphur to achieve a silvery-grey stain (for further details please see Lime-sulphur and Ash for Bonsai )
With the tree safely back home, owner Mike was kind enough to supply me with further images of the tree as the stain dried in the sun.
As the deadwood begins to weather and crack over time, and the foliage mass builds up, this should turn into a very impressive tree!
