This Chinese Juniper bonsai (Juniperus chinensis) was given to me during the Summer of 2010 to be styled. Of unknown origin, the bonsai had a mixture of mature (scale) and immature (needle) foliage and had become very unruly!
The trunk of the Juniper had good movement and, judging by the strong callus along its edges, well-established 'shari' dead-wood. The shari lacked the impression of being old, having simply lost its bark rather than showing the shaping and texture of the wood underneath that comes with age.
During the initial styling of the bonsai in Autumn 2010, I shaped the shari with a dremel carving machine.........
October 2010: Before taking charge of the unruly branches, pruning, wiring and placing them.
