Potting On Accent Plants

Once the materials have been sourced, the potting up of the Accents is very straightforward. Before potting, drainage mesh or a similar barrier needs to be used to cover the drainage hole(s) of the pot.

Use standard bonsai draining mesh to cover the drainage hole, hold the mesh in position with a piece of wire. This will stop soil falling through the base of the pot and bugs from entering the soil.

Alternatively, a thin layer of sphagnum moss can be used.

The Hostas are placed into the pot and soil is gently worked in around the sides of the rootball. Use fingers or a chopstick to ensure that no air pockets remain in the soil, however, it is equally important that the soil is not compressed. Badly compressed soil will become airless, poor draining and water resistant.

As perennials, the foliage of Hostas dieback during the Winter and fresh growth appears in March the following year. The clumps become gradually larger and denser, as more eyes (shoots) appear each Spring.
