Martin
is an accomplished enthusiast from the UK who has been studying bonsai
since an early age. He has had many of his trees exhibited on the Federation
of British Bonsai Societies' stands at prominent UK Flower Shows, these
going on to win Show medals. Since then, he has started to teach bonsai
and has built up a unique record of the development of the trees in
his collection, spanning over 15 years. These photographic records have
now been seen in his book 'Bonsai Life Histories' published by David
& Charles Books. An example of one of his life histories can be
found within the Advanced Techniques
and Articles section of Bonsai4me.com
Below
are a taster of some of Martins' trees, many of which are developed
from old garden specimens that have been developed over the years, into
some very beautiful bonsai;
Lonicera nitida /Shrub Honeysuckle
Developed over 9 years from part of an old hedge, this
beautiful Lonicera stands at 54cm (21¼") tall in the triple trunk
form.
Berberis
thunbergii atropurpurea
Originally
collected as a 2m (6½ft) tall garden tree, this Berberis has been styled
and refined over the past 9 years. Height 53cm (21"), trunk diameter
16cm (6¼").
Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Kosteri' / Hinoki cypress
Purchased as a large garden tree from a nursery, this
Cypress is now only 74cm (29") tall but imparts an image of far greater
height!
Ginkgo
biloba / Maidenhair Tree
Bought
as an 80 year old bonsai from a fellow enthusiast nearly 10 years ago,
this superb Gingko's appearance has been dramatically changed and improved.
Styled in the 'Candle Flame' form, height 97cm/ (38").
Lonicera nitida / Shrub honeysuckle
Collected 7 years ago from some wasteland that had recently
been turned into a building site, this tree now stands at 66cm (26")
tall.
Acer
buergerianum / Trident Maple
Bought
as an established bonsai over 10 years ago, Martin decided to completely
restructure this Trident as it had poor branch structure. After removing
nearly all of its branches and re-growing them over the years, this
tree now makes a Winter display rivalling that of its Summer appearance.
Height
79cm (31")
Crataegus
monogyna / Hawthorn
Developed
from material collected 13 years ago, the story of this Hawthorn can
be followed within the Advanced Techniques and Articles section of Bonsai4me.com
Height
46cm (18")
