Repotting A Large Bonsai And Removing Ground Soil

This video shows the repotting of a large, half a metre wide Escallonia that I styled last Autumn.

It’s a slightly different repot to normal as the main purpose is to remove the heavy, wet clay ground-soil that is at the centre of the rootball, something that I see all too often on bonsai despite it causing problems with the health of the tree, lack of vigour and rotting wood.

Please note that it is not safe to remove more than a 1/3 of the soil if you are repotting a coniferous tree species such as Pine, Juniper and Spruce.
