Partial Defoliation Of Deciduous Bonsai In Summer

This film shows my technique for greatly increasing the ramification of my deciduous bonsai. Partial defoliation is particularly useful for species such as Fagus/Beech, Quercus/Oaks and Carpinus/Hornbeam but is also suitable for all deciduous species across the board.
Don’t start this work too early as your trees will need a full canopy of leaves immediately after their Spring flush to encourage vigour. However, from early June (8-10 weeks after leaf-break) they can be partially defoliated until early July.

Defoliation of any kind is demanding on the resources of a bonsai, avoid if your tree is weak or in poor health.
